Professor Dame Wendy Hall Awarded the Sir Frank Whittle Medal

Professor Dame Wendy Hall DBE FREng FRS has been awarded the prestigious Sir Frank Whittle Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering, recognising her outstanding contribution to engineering, Web Science and the development of artificial intelligence over a career spanning five decades.

Recognising a Lifetime of Innovation

Named after pioneering British engineer Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine, the Sir Frank Whittle Medal is one of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s highest individual honours. It is presented annually to a UK-based engineer whose sustained achievements have had a profound impact on their engineering discipline.

Professor Dame Wendy Hall becomes only the third woman to receive the medal in its 25-year history. Alongside her pioneering research in Web Science, she has played a leading role in shaping the UK’s AI strategy and continues to champion the responsible development of artificial intelligence through her work with governments, international organisations and academia.
